Custom WaveFront LASIK
LASIK is the single most common Vision Correction Surgery performed in the United States today. LASIK evolved from PRK as the demand for
more rapid visual recovery evolved. Dr. Shelby in Shreveport performs both conventional and CustomVue LASIK.
Patients interested in LASIK must first undergo a screening evaluation. Dr. Shelby will perform this evaluation personally. Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. The screening evaluation will consist of:
- Careful Refraction - To check your glasses prescription. There must not have been a large change over the past year.
- Pachymetry - Measurement of the Thickness of the Cornea. The cornea must be a certain thickness to have LASIK.
- Pupil Measurement - Large pupils may preclude someone from LASIK because of night time symptoms. Measurements are taken in the dark and in light.
- Topography - Measure Corneal Astigmatism. This is taking a map of your cornea. It lets us make sure your not at risk of post operative problems.
- Cycloplegic Refraction - Check your glasses prescription with your eyes dilated. This will tell your true refractive error. There can not be a large difference with the undilated refraction.
- Retina Evaluation - Careful look at the back of the eye. Checks for any tears or problems with the retina. Some patients will need retina laser before having LASIK.
Some people are not good candidates for LASIK but may be candidates for Epi-LASIK or PRK.
Once it has been determined that you are a good candidate, you can prepare for the surgery. If you wear contacts lenses you will need to take Soft Lenses out for at least 2 weeks before surgery.
Hard or Rigid contact lenses need to be out for at least one month per decade they have been worn. Once your eyes have remained stable in glasses, you are ready for a WaveScan measurement.
What is CustomVue LASIK?
CustomVue LASIK is the newest, safest way to perform Laser Vision Correction in Shreveport. A WaveScan measurement is taken of your eyes. This WaveScan is a "finger print" of your vision. It measures not
only nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, but also higher order errors in your visual system. Once theses higher order errors are measured, we can program this into the Excimer Laser and treat them.

How is LASIK performed?
The LASIK procedure itself is performed using the VISX S4 Excimer Laser.
- Drops are placed on the eye to ensure that you do not feel anything touching your eye. A mild sedative is also given 30-45 minutes before the procedure.
- A MicroKeratome vacuum ring is placed on your eye.
- The microkeratome then cuts a thin flap on the surface of the cornea.
- The corneal flap is then gently lifted
- The corneal bed is then treated with the VISX S4 Excimer Laser.
- Once the laser is complete, the corneal bed is checked for any debris and gently irrigated with sterile solution.
- The corneal flap is then replaced.
- Drops are placed on your eye and your eye is immediately examined after surgery under the microscope.
After the procedure, you will experience a mild amount of discomfort. Your eyes will be a little blurry but you will immediately see better than before the surgery. You will be placed on eye drops and instructed to go home and rest.
It is important to not rub your eyes after surgery as this could cause the flap to shift out of position. You will be followed up the next day for a check up and will be seeing very well at that time.
