LASIK - Nearsighted

Nearsightedness is a condition that places the focal point of your eye somewhere IN FRONT of your retina. People who are overly nearsighted (or myopic) have trouble seeing at a distance but usually have great near vision.

Because the image that enters your eye falls in front of your retina, your eye is essentially too long. With Myopic LASIK, the goal is to reshape the cornea to bring the image into focus on the retina.

As with all LASIK, a flap is cut in the cornea and laser is applied. With Myopic LASIK, the laser is applied to the center of the cornea in order to flatten the surface, as can be seen in the pictures below.

Once the laser is applied, the flap is gently placed into position and drops are started. Generally vision is good immediately after surgery. Within 24 hours your vision is good enough to drive and resume normal activities. You can download the Patient Information Booklet on Myopic LASIK HERE. It's in PDF format so you will need Acrobat Reader to view it.
